How to choose the perfect halal cosmetics
What are Halal Cosmetics?
Halal-certified cosmetics are products that are manufactured without the use of najis ingredients and alcohol, and do not contain any animal derived ingredients.
How to ensure that a cosmetic or makeup product is halal certified?
Halal is a common concept shared across the world. There are accredited Halal certification bodies across the world to make sure that the rules are followed strictly. As such, Halal Certified products will have a symbol of certification on it. Do check for label for these.
1. Animal fat
Animal fat is used in many creams, lotions and lipsticks. These ingredients are considered najis. Check out the label to ensure that the products are free from animal fats.
2. Animal derived ingredients
Products like shampoos, hair conditioners, creams, lotions, and toothpaste might contain Gelatin and protein like collagen or elastin from animals. These ingredients are considered as non-halal, therefore, refrain from products using these ingredients.
3. Carmine Or Cochineal.
A common ingredient often found in lipsticks is Carmine / CI 75470. It is the colour derived from insects which are sun-dried and crushed. This red colour is non-halal. Therefore, avoid this ingredient and only choose halal lipsticks.
4. Alcohol
Alcohol is an active ingredient in perfume, deodorants, hair sprays and nail paint remover. It might be present on the label with several names like Stearyl alcohol, Cetyl alcohol or Myristyl Alcohol. Avoid these ingredients and use Halal nail polish remover, Halal Nail Polish, Halal deodorants and sprays.
